The Illustrators at the Guild (IAG) presents:

Licensing Your Art, With Special Guest Speaker Nina Edwards

Thursday, October 2, 2008, 6:30pm-9:00pm

Your intellectual property can earn you royalties. Licensing is a multi-billion dollar industry. You can make income from the same image over and over again by learning how to license your artwork, characters, and designs.

Nina Edwards will share her knowledge of and experiences with building licensing income.

Nina Edwards is an award-winning freelance illustrator. She has illustrated many fashion and lifestyle books and magazines, including Seventeen, Cosmo Girl, Girls' Life, Bridal Guide, and American Baby magazines.

She has also licensed her illustrations to US and international paper products companies, including Madison Park Greetings, the Gift wrap company, and Target. You can also find her illustrations on your cell phone: she licenses wallpapers to Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint.

She is a guest speaker at various art schools and international art organizations in US and Asia, including Parsons School of Design, Fashion Institute of Technology, the Art Institute of New York City, Columbia University, the Graphic Artists Guild, the Society of Children's Book Illustrator's Group, and Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (Taiwan).

My name is _________________. I am a _______________working in ____________, ___. I am opposed to the Shawn Bentley Orphan Works Act of 2008, S. 2913 unless it can be amended to protect visual creators and to include, at a minimum, a publicly accessible ?notice of use? filing.
This is an inexpensive and effective way to allow creators to identify themselves as copyright owners so that creators may preserve their legal ownership rights. It also eliminates the ability to make fraudulent claims of conducting a diligent search for copyright owners.
If the bill cannot be amended then I urge you to vote NO.
I am a member of The Graphic Artists Guild.
I would like to remind everyone this country's founding fathers established strong patent & copyright laws because they understood the need for incentives to drive commerce. There is almost no kind of business or trade on the face of the earth which can operate without the contributions of inventors, writers, designers & artists. There is a terrible trend in corporate culture to eliminate fair compensation for creative work. The result is a society full of intelligent people who increasingly will not create anything because they know they will only be ripped off by the big guys. This is why good writing is rapidly disappearing from book shelves, music, television, films & theater. This is why artwork in books, magazines, ads & packaging is getting cruder, uglier and less inspired. This is in large part why our civilization is simply decaying into a vulgar, ignorant mess.
If only we could hope someday to see this is not to be the American way.

6/25/08, Guild office, 6:30pm
Let's try our 1st Digital Media portfolio night. Other Guild committees do this now & then, why not us? Bring your portfolios, sketchbooks and/or URLs since we'll have a laptop and projector for browsing websites. We'll have snacks & beverages. We can look at each other's stuff, ask for critiques if we're in the mood, discuss anything.

Since we already had 3 yes RSVPS before I wrote the above, we can still spend some time doing what follows below:

Dale of DaleGladstone.com will demonstrate Alias Sketchbook Pro by Autodesk on the Tablet PC. Sketchbook is a fun, affordable program similar to photoshop. It's useful to a lot of different people and compatible with any Wacom Tablet user or Tablet PC user. The Tablet PC is also something you can rarely get your hands on to try out before buying. If there is interest, we can also look at using Sketchbook files in Photoshop & Illustrator.

Snacks & beverages will be served.

DANIEL ABRAHAM is an attorney in private practice specializing in copyrights, trademarks and licensing. His clients include illustrators, designers, photographers, writers and other creative professionals. Before establishing his full-time legal practice, Daniel was an illustrator for 25 years and served for 15 years on the national board of the Graphic Artists Guild, where, as Vice-President for Public Affairs, he directed responses to legal and legislative issues facing the industry.

A co-founder of Artists for Tax Equity, Daniel helped draft and successfully lobby for 1988 legislation that granted artists and photographers Congressional exemption from the tax capitalization provisions of the 1986 Tax Reform Act. He was a key figure in the Guild's initiative to revise California's sales tax laws, drafting legislation, revenue impact statements, the amicus brief in Preston v. State Board of Equalization, and portions of the regulatory changes following that court victory.

Daniel has submitted testimony to Congress on copyright issues, and negotiated with the Copyright Office over the copyrightability of graphic design. He has lectured on contracts and copyrights at the Society of Illustrators and other venues. Daniel created the Legal Easel folder on the Ispot's Art Talk to address illustrators' legal questions free of charge.

In addition to managing his caseload, he is currently an adjunct professor at FIT. To learn more about Daniel and his work you can look at his website:
