What I have in mind for October is finding one or more good 3-D digital illustrators or Flash cartoon animators to give a bit of a presentation. Any suggestions? I've been trying to find people like these most of the year. Some nice folks made referrals but they fell through. It would be great to get more help with this.

Snacks & beverages will be provided.

Marketing Unusual Illustration Styles
Thursday, September 17th | 7:00-9:00 PM
Pratt Institute | Manhattan Campus
144 W 14th St., Room 213

What does it take to turn an uncommon technique into a commercially successful career? What do Art directors and designers need to know to effectively commission unusual artwork? Join Margaret Cusack and Ellen Rixford for a discussion of how they effectively brought their styles to market in the highly competitive visual communications field.

Margaret Cusack is an illustrator and graphic designer who creates "realism in stitchery and fabric." She has designed and stitched Broadway show posters, a Time Magazine cover, even soft sculpture fish for "Monty Python's Spamalot." Her 2005 retrospective exhibition at the Museum of American Illustration in New York will travel to the Hanten Museum in Logan, Kansas in 2010. Signed copies of her book, Picture Your World in Applique published by Watson-Guptill will be available.

Ellen Rixford is a multimedia sculptor who specializes in mechanical figures, automata, puppets, displays, dimensional illustration, and miniature sets. She has had a solo exhibit at the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators in New York, and a one person show at ArtSpace in Tokyo, Japan. She has taught and guest lectured in many American art schools, and has done lecture tours in Japan and China. She is also the author of the book Three-Dimensional Illustration, published by Watson-Guptill, and is now working on a book on puppet and automaton mechanics.

Illustrators at the Guild
Graphic Artists Guild, NYC Chapter

The next meeting of the IAG is:

Thursday, September 10
6:30pm - 9:00pm
National Guild Office, 32 Broadway, Suite 1114, NYC
RSVP required: chris@cjohnsonart.com (845) 548-0872
----------------

Theme for the meeting is "A Traditional Media Mixer", a pixel-free
evening just for having a little fun, and as a change of pace from the
dry, technical, computer-related stuff we ought to know, but can't help
but be bored with sometimes. (O.K, so it's clear I've sat in front of
my computer too long, and have finally snapped from "Photoshop
fatigue"). No matter; come and see if I can remember which end of a
brush to hold!

Homework assignment: Bring in some favorite drawing or other
material (please, avoid anything bulky, messy, or toxic) that you can
show off to the group. I would like for members be able to sample a
variety of implements, papers, media, etc. and be able to exchange a
few tips and tricks. And if you can bring some work that's in-progress,
or other samples that show technique, you get a gold star! I will bring
an easel and, if possible, also pack an extra light.

I look forward to having some fun on Thursday, hope you can make it!

On a scale of one to ten, is this you?
Creativity: Ten. Sales skills: Three?

Wondering how to turn your artistic sensibility into profit? Being inspired to create art is easy. Developing new business, on the other hand, is not. Given today's economy, knowing how to easily, inexpensively and effectively reach potential new clients is a must. Wendy Weiss is a former ballet dancer who understands both the artistic process and cold calling. In this interactive workshop, based on over 15 years of real-life, hands-on cold calling experience, Wendy teaches specific techniques which enable participants to use their creativity to terminate telephone terror and turn cold calls to cash.

Topics include:
• Developing a can't-miss marketing plan for cold calling
• Eliminating Telephone Terror and Call Reluctance
• Creating cold calling scripts that make prospects want to see you
• Breezing past the screens/gatekeepers and handling the voice-mail barrier
• Doubling the number of face-to-face appointments set
• The forgotten wisdom: It's not what you say, it's how you say it.
